Yumiko Sunami is a composer, arranger, and conductor. Her 19-piece Yumiko Sunami Jazz Orchestra made their debut at the Blue Note in New York City on October 10th, 2004. In May 2005 her composition commissioned and premiered by Lord Beaverbrook Wind Ensemble was featured on TV, radio, and newspapers in Canada.
Yumiko is from Osaka, Japan, and moved to New York in 2000 after graduating from the University of North Texas, where she studied with Neil Slater. While still a student, she started receiving requests for her music from band directors and players in USA, Canada and Japan. She has received numerous awards, including the 1999 Gil Evans Fellowship by the International Association for Jazz Education, and was a finalist for the 2004 BMI Jazz Composers Workshop Charlie Parker Award.
Her works have been recorded frequently by the One O’Clock Lab Band, a group from the University of North Texas, one of the premier college music programs in the world, as well as on the International Association for Jazz Education Taking Notes Vol. 2: Showcasing World’s Most Outstanding Jazz Students. Her music has been performed at many jazz festivals, concert halls, jazz clubs and schools in the USA, Canada, and Asian countries.
