Hello denizen of the blogosphere! Welcome to the PULSE blog and my first entry.
My goal with PULSE is to write music that I would not/could not play with my big band; much the same way as the music I write for my big band would not work in a trio/quartet etc... format. Of course, no matter what the setting, I always aim for something to sound uniquely mine, even if I don't like it!
I'm looking forward to our concert on January 24 at the Old Stone House in Brooklyn; the music I heard at the last rehearsal sounded interesting and the ensemble is doing a great job of getting at whatever each composer is striving for.
I'm still not sure about my own piece: I'm having a tough time balancing the improvised sections vs. the ensemble sections, finding the right blend is crucial to the way I think of things and i don't feel as if I have it right yet...
