Pulse origins

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to the Pulse blog! I'm Joe Phillips and I guess you can call me the "founding father" of this wonderful federation. The concept of Pulse had been in my head for a long time before actually getting down to starting it. As a composer in NYC, it is often difficult to get your music noticed, heard, appreciated by more folks than your parents and close personal friends. Many of the composers of Pulse are doing wonderful things on their own with their own projects and ensembles. I thought that instead of trying to get our voices heard each alone, that banding together might be a better way to achieve the goals of recognition that we all wanted. Being a DIY type of guy, in May of 2004 I called a "gathering of the fellowship." I wanted a group where composers who believe in creating music not bound by categories, boundaries, and traditions could come together and have their music heard more widely. So I choose 6 other like-minded composers and Pulse was born. Over the past year and a half, all of the composers have shaped Pulse to form a wonderful environment for creativity and camaraderie. One great benefit is that over the time we've been together we've been able to get to know each better, both artistically and personally. To me, this has been one of the best rewards of Pulse.

My role in Pulse is a sort of director/organizer/facilitator so you'll be hearing from me in future posts about things we have planned for the Pulse, thoughts about why Pulse is necessary, about my own group, Numinous, as well as some musings on various topics from contemporary music, film, sports, and society. I look forward to sharing with you more about me as a person and composer and I look forward to getting feedback from you.
